When Iranian forces restricted travel through the Strait of Hormuz, they effectively cut off 30-35% of the world's helium supply from Qatar—the gas that's essential for cooling the machines that manufacture AI chips. QatarEnergy estimates helium exports will drop 17% even after hostilities end, with full capacity recovery taking three to five years.

This exposes a critical vulnerability in AI's supply chain that most builders never think about. While everyone obsesses over GPU availability and model parameters, the entire industry depends on an odorless gas primarily known for party balloons. Chip manufacturers are now scrambling for short-term suppliers, driving up costs in bidding wars.
