The training would happen in secure, accredited data centers where AI company personnel with appropriate clearance might occasionally access the classified material.
This represents a significant escalation in military AI adoption as the Pentagon pushes to become an "AI-first warfighting force" amid escalating tensions with Iran. The Defense Department has already signed agreements with OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI to operate their models in classified settings, but training on classified data would create much tighter coupling between AI companies and sensitive intelligence. The plan faces obvious security risks that even proponents acknowledge. For developers, this signals how seriously the government takes AI customization.
