Moonshot AI, the Chinese lab behind the Kimi models, reportedly plans to open a final round of pre-IPO funding in August at a pre-money valuation of up to 50 billion dollars. That would be the last outside money it takes before going public, and it is expected to pursue a Hong Kong listing within roughly six months, possibly before the end of the year.
The number is what stands out. The round Moonshot is closing now values it at 31.5 billion dollars. A jump to as much as 50 billion in the next round would mean nearly doubling the company's valuation in a matter of weeks, the kind of revaluation that used to take years and now happens in the space of a single product cycle.
That product is Kimi K3. Released last week as a 2.8 trillion parameter system, it is the largest open model ever put out, about 75 percent larger than the previous record holder, and it turned into the most talked about model in the world within days. The business numbers moved with it. Moonshot's annual recurring revenue reached 300 million dollars in June, up from 200 million in April, and daily revenue jumped at least sixfold after the K3 launch.
The same demand that is driving the valuation is also its clearest constraint. Kimi K3 strained Moonshot's computing capacity so severely that the company had to suspend new consumer subscriptions days after launch, reopening them only in batches as it adds hardware. A pre-IPO investor is being asked to price a company whose product is simultaneously the most in demand and the most supply constrained in its category.
The raise is the financial capstone of the week's story. A Chinese lab shipped the largest open model in the world, watched demand outrun its servers, and is now converting that momentum into a valuation approaching the level of the largest private AI companies, on a timeline measured against a Hong Kong listing rather than a distant someday. Whether 50 billion holds will depend on independent investors, but the trajectory from launch to capacity crunch to pre-IPO round has played out in under two weeks.
